I hope I know these things before I became an Non Resident Indian.
As an Indian NRI Expat living in Nordic country for last 11 years, the most important things I have learnt/practically experienced are:
1) You need to Convert your Indian Resident Bank Account to Non-Resident Account as per FEMA rule.
2) NRI can’t open PPF in India
3)PPF which was opened in India when you were resident, can’t be extended after 15 years once you become NRI.
4) Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana, NRI can’t hold it.
5) PLEASE understand the Tax treaty (Double Tax Avoidance Agreement) signed between India and the country you are resident of now.
6) People take out EPF money in India after the move to foreign country, EPF can be tax free in India, but it may be taxable in your tax resident country (Check DTAA).
7) Are you quitting your Indian job and moving to another country, if possible, try to convert your indian company group health care policy to private medical care policy for you and your family. (Its good to have a medical insurance in India).
8) Check with your Life Insurance policy holder that you Life insurance is valid even if you move to a new country, get this is written confirmation.
9) Update your Investment, Mutual fund, Lic policy and demat account status as NRI.
Pls share this post, so it can reach many NRI and they can know about these topics.(Pls note these are my own experience and shall not be considered as Advice, Please take your own decision. My aim is to create awareness among Indian NRI Expat)
